Overview
AVT Day will focus on the role of the SLP regarding Co-Treatment, Theory of Mind in relation to children with hearing loss in Early Intervention, and the key to connected speech through acoustic parameters of prosody (duration, intensity and frequency).
AUD Day will address the management of Auditory Neuropathy, an audiological perspective of the co-treatment model, neuropsychological assessment for patients with hearing loss, and optimizing music perception for pediatric cochlear implant recipients.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
- Apply learned information about Theory of Mind to your current caseload
- Create lesson plans to target Theory of Mind skills in children with hearing loss in EI
- Describe key components of a strengths based coaching co-treat model
- Define the acoustic parameters of prosody (duration, intensity and frequency)
- Describe one strategy for improving vocal intensity (loudness) in a linguistic context
- Describe those aspects of music that are most to least accessible (perceptually) and enjoyable to pediatric CI users
- Describe auditory training approaches and experiential factors that can help optimize music perception, enjoyment, and that can integrate music into auditory training protocols
- Implement the use of powerful questions to obtain information on functional auditory outcomes in order to facilitate next level goals for a child and family
- Describe best practice protocols for audiological diagnosis and management of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder in children
- Identify etiologies associated with ANSD and the varied phenotypes associated with this disorder
- Identify common pitfalls and barriers to fair and valid testing for children with sensory and/or speech impairments
